Installing Heidenhain Linear Scales: The Invisible Precision Behind Every Movement

In precision manufacturing, there’s an “invisible ruler” that silently records every tiny motion with micron-level accuracy—this is the linear scale. Though small in appearance, it’s a key to ensuring machine tools and automation equipment run with high precision and reliability.

Recently, one of our customers selected Heidenhain linear scales for their machine. After receiving the shipment, our professional technicians installed, calibrated, and tested the system on-site—further enhancing the accuracy and stability of the equipment. What Is a Linear Scale?

A linear scale measures linear displacement using optical grating principles.

It consists of two main parts:

Scale Grating: a precision ruler with fine lines (up to thousands per millimeter).

Readhead: a sensor that moves with the machine axis, reading changes in the grating lines and converting them into electrical signals.

Together, they allow the CNC system to “see” the exact movement distance—just like giving the machine a pair of precise eyes.
